Post Office: Cash is a popular gift

New research from the Post Office has revealed that cash is becoming an increasingly popular gift at Christmas time, with 50 per cent of people giving money to someone as a present.

The Post Office, which offers a MoneyGram service for quick and easy transfers, found that nearly two thirds (55 per cent) of over-55s are in the habit of sending cash gifts to people, including their children and grandchildren at Christmas.

Among 35 to 44-year-olds on the other hand, no more than one in ten (11 per cent) gave left their parents cash under the Christmas tree.

Rob Scott, MoneyGram manager at the Post Office, said: "With Christmas Day just around the corner, many last-minute Christmas shoppers will be looking for a way to send cash quickly to friends and family in the UK and overseas.

"The MoneyGram service is now available at all Post Office branches so it has never been easier or more convenient to send cash at Christmas – simply pop into your local Post Office branch and the money will arrive at its destination in just ten minutes."

Recently, the Post Office announced plans to launch a new Christmas Club scheme offering customers a safe and secure way to save money for Christmas 2008.
