Halifax reveals spending patterns

Post-Christmas shoppers are either hardcore bargain hunters or those looking to return unwanted or faulty gifts, according to the Halifax.

UK adults will spend £12 billion on Christmas presents this year, the bank has predicted, but knowing the consumer's rights when it comes to refunds and returns will help people who receive an unwanted or faulty gift.

"There is no need for faulty or unwanted gifts to lie at the bottom of the wardrobe; with the right knowledge of your basic shopping rights you should have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year," said Ken Stannard, head of credit cards at Halifax.

Consumers are advised that consumers are entitled to full cash refund on items that are faulty or do not fit the description at the time of purchase, rather than having to settle for a credit note or a replacement, the bank said.

Although receipts are the best form of evidence, a credit card bill or bank statement can be used as proof of purchase but for faulty goods, a receipt is not required, Halifax added.

The advice comes as 86 per cent of Britons claim to be "savvy" bargain hunters even though just 38 per cent manage to stick to their financial budget, according a survey released by PayPal this week.
