Direct Line comments on mobile sentences

Insurance company Direct Line has welcomed government proposals to hand jail sentences to drivers who use mobile phones at the wheel.

Research earlier this year by the company revealed that up to a million motorists were using handheld mobiles while driving at any one time.

This amounts to about one in 34 drivers, the research said.

Carmel McCarthy, motor spokesperson at Direct Line, said: "The use of mobile phones whilst driving can be a major distraction and a serious threat to road safety.

"Direct Line Insurance welcomes any guidelines that promote responsible driving as a positive move."

She drew attention to the Highway Code, which describes the use of handheld mobile phones as distracting.

Satnav devices were also cited by the code as a potential hazard as they took a drive's attention from the road ahead.

Recent research by Admiral shows that seven million households in the UK now has two or more cars.
