Sainsbury's: Credit card deals should be sought in 2008

Consumers would be well-advised to review their finances and shop around for credit card deals, Sainsbury's Bank has suggested.

Head of cards and Sainsbury's Bank Donald MacLeod said that taking stock of finances is "key" for the coming year.

He advised Britons to shop around and try to find a better deal than they currently have and "take advantage of those deals".

Regarding strategies for managing post-Christmas debt, Mr MacLeod recommended that consumers who are unable to pay off their credit cards in full still try to pay above the minimum required.

"The other thing is to look around and see whether there are better deals than what you’re currently getting from your provider and that may well offer you an opportunity to reassess your costs," he added.

Figures from Apacs, the UK's payments association, reveal that Britons spent £159.8 billion on plastic cards in 2006.
