Erik Nelson, a spokesperson for Norwich Union, said that "most insurers" will provide a discount of around ten per cent if purchased on the internet.
Another option for cutting the cost of car insurance premiums is to include a partner on the policy - but only if they have a clean driving record, he explained.
"I don’t think many people are aware that putting a named driver on your licence will give you a discount," he added.
Keeping a vehicle safely stored in a garage will also help reduce car insurance premiums, said Mr Nelsen.
He also said that there is a pay-as-you-drive option for motor insurance, which is similar to pay-as-you-go mobile phones, that can also save money for consumers.
Norwich Union is the largest insurance company in the UK.
