Failing to note periods of dangerous or severe weather and not researching visa requirements for certain countries are some of the mistakes travellers make, according to esure.
Fewer than half (48 per cent) of people planning a trip abroad check for severe weather warnings prior to leaving, the esure survey indicates, while 47 per cent said they look at the foreign office website to find out about travel warnings to that country.
Jacky Brown, head of travel insurance at esure, said that holidaymakers should make sure they are not "caught out" by issues that could have been forseen.
"Delays and even flight cancellations in such extreme weather are inevitable therefore it's vital to make sure you have travel insurance to make sure you're covered," she added.
December research from Sainsbury's Bank indicates that 12 million people plan to book a holiday before February.
