Abbey Mortgages urges Britons to prepare for changes

Abbey Mortgages is advising people to make sure they are financially prepared to meet unexpected changes in the coming year.

According to research from Abbey Mortgages, 62 per cent of Britons found themselves facing a life-altering event during 2006-07.

These changes have included those related to employment, deaths in the family, unexpected illness, childbirth, marriage, divorce and a financial windfall.

Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, head of mortgages at Abbey, said that the most important thing was to "make sure your finances are in shape" in case the unexpected happens.

"Making sure you have sufficient protection to cover job loss or illness when you have a big commitment such as a mortgage is one way of being prepared," she added.

A flexible mortgage could also help a homeowner prepare for the possibility of being asked to relocate for a job, said Ms Audhlam-Gardiner.

Research from Abbey recently determined that 99 per cent of Britons should consider getting their finances into better shape.
