Alliance & Leicester Mortgages: Buy-to-let is long-term investment

Buy-to-let investment is largely seen by the UK's landlords as a long-term project, according to an Alliance & Leicester Mortgages survey.

Some 57 per cent of those responding to Alliance & Leicester Mortgages said that they have invested in property in order to accumulate assets for the future, the figures reveal.

And 87 per cent of respondents said that being a landlord was profitable, while 64 per cent said they plan to continue in that role for some years.

Stephen Leonard, director of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester, said that it was "encouraging" to read that landlords see their investment as a long-term project.

"Whether it is to provide a pension for retirement, or a monthly income, landlords' ambitions suggest buy-to-let will remain an important part of the overall UK housing market," he added.

Alliance & Leicester recently commented on January's base rate decision, saying that the choice to hold rates at 5.5 per cent was expected.
