Number of drivers without car insurance 'has fallen'

The number of drivers who take to the road without car insurance has decreased over the past couple of years, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA).

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for BIBA, said that uninsured driving rates have been reduced by more than ten per cent in the past two years.

He explained that drivers without car insurance are now faced with checks by police, who have access to the motor insurance database and who can seize vehicles.

Cameras that automatically scan vehicles to test if they are insured have also been employed to help law enforcement reduce these cases, he added.

"In 2007, approximately 150,000 were seized by the police and in 2006 this number was 78,000," Mr Trudgill remarked, adding that he expects an even higher number this year.

Each year, around 23,000 people are involved in accidents that include uninsured drivers, according to the Motor Insurer's Bureau.
