AA: Car insurance premiums continue to rise

According to AA, car insurance premiums are continuing an upward trend which began in April 2006.

The AA Index found that comprehensive car insurance premiums increased by 2.4 per cent during the past quarter, while third-party, fire and theft cover rose by 1.4 per cent.

An average of £629.04 can now be expected for an annual comprehensive car insurance policy and £628.60 for third-party, fire and theft, the figures indicate.

John Close of AA said that a ten per cent annual rise in personal injury claims was causing premiums to increase, while the cost of repairing damage is also going up due to modern cars' intricate safety devices.

"The irony of this is that you are much less likely to be killed in a serious accident – and are thus more likely to make a personal injury claim, the cost of which will ultimately find its way to car insurance premiums," he remarked.

In October, AA Insurance warned drivers to make sure they remembered to renew their cover.
