Confused.com: Drivers still using mobiles on the road

The issue of using a mobile while driving appears to be continuing, as 50 per cent of people say they have seen a motorist texting while driving, according to research by Confused.com.

Convictions for driving while using a mobile phone are rising 18 per cent month on month, which could be attributed to police enforcement resulting in points being added to a driving licenses and fines.

"The message is simple: never use a mobile phone while driving, unless you have a hands-free kit," explained Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com.

Analysis by Confused.com shows that premiums can increase by ten per cent when a driver has three points, although this jumps to a 50 per cent price hike for nine points.

The importance of safety while driving has already been highlighted by the car insurance comparison site, when they released statistics showing that the number of drivers running red lights rose by 11 per cent in 2007.

The research showed that failing to respond to a traffic sign can result in a TS10 conviction, which can also lead to an increase in car insurance costs.
