Abbey: Women need to get finances in shape

Women are being warned to become more financially savvy after new research has revealed that females are less disciplined when it comes to managing their money.

A study by for Abbey by ICM looked at the 'fitness levels' of the nation's finances, judging by the financial products people have, how competitive these are and how often they shop around for better deals.

The survey showed that women were "financially overweight" compared to men, with 70 per cent of them having no savings or less than they would need to live on for three months.

They were also weighed down by the fact that 25 per cent had never shopped around for a different insurance product and a third have not got a competitive rate on their mortgage.

Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, head of mortgages at Abbey, said that there could be a number of reasons why women are less financially savvy than men.

"One, you could argue that maybe women have less time and they're juggling more things and so they just make less time for their finances," she said.

"And maybe also, they're just less confident in them; it's certainly been, traditionally, a male dominated thing to do and women are just spending less time because they feel less sure about what the right thing to do is."
