Halifax Home Insurance gives storm advice

Halifax Home Insurance is offering homeowners advice on preparing to deal with wintry conditions, following severe weather warnings issued by the Met Office this week.

Guidance is offered on a number of recommended courses of action to prevent an excess of personal loan requests due to the impact of the weather, including preparing pipes, securing outdoor items and checking insulation.

The guidelines also offer advice about what to do in an emergency.

The Met Office has forecast gusty winds and heavy rain and snow which to hit most of the UK in the coming days.

Senior claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance Martyn Foulds said: "With the average claim for storm damage costing around £1,000, it is advisable for homeowners to take preventative steps to reduce the risk of damage to their homes."

He also warned people to "ensure they have adequate home insurance cover in place".

Halifax recently advised homeowners to prepare for the onset of more floods. According to the latest figures from AA Insurance, last year's flood devastation has pushed home insurance premiums to their highest ever level.

There was an estimated £3 billion worth of damage caused in the floods last summer.
