esure car insurance reveals winter weather danger

esure car insurance has released figures showing that motorists in Britain are more than 30 per cent more likely to have an accident in the winter months than in the summer.

The research, which has been released in the wake of a new spate of severe weather hitting the UK this week, also shows that 20 per cent of drivers - six million people - have experienced an accident while driving in icy conditions in Britain.

Claims at esure car insurance rose by 130,000 in November 2007 with the onset of winter.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said: "It is of the utmost importance to be aware of road safety during the winter months and to judge carefully when it is safe to drive."

Emergency services have been called to the roads to help a number of people affected by extreme weather conditions throughout the UK over the past few weeks. At the beginning of January a man was killed after his car slipped off an icy road and plunged 30 feet down an embankment.
