Unhappy Brits heading for sunnier climes

More Brits are heading abroad than ever before, in a bid to escape the pressures of life in the UK, according to a survey by Natwest.

The high street bank's global study of the opinions and attitudes of over 1,000 British expatriates found that most feel more at home abroad and do not plan to return to the UK.

Undertaken in conjunction with the Centre for Future Studies think tank, the NatWest International Personal Banking (IPB) Quality of Life Report found that more than 90 per cent of Brits living abroad feel they have a better quality of life than in the UK.

Immigrants cited the most popular reason for leaving as wanting to find a better way of life, with 55 percent of those surveyed admitting they were unhappy with life in the UK and 99 per cent saying they had no regrets about immigrating.

Expats rated Canada as the country that offered the best quality of life for residents, with New Zealand in second place and the United Arab Emirates at the bottom of the top ten.

Record numbers of Brits have left the UK over the last couple of years. In 2006 207,000 British citizens left the country, equalling one departure every three minutes.
