Nationwide Insurance: Holidaymakers living dangerously

A survey from Nationwide has found that 35 per cent of the people they questioned do not always take out travel insurance when they go on holiday, meaning they would not be fully covered in the event of any cancellation, medical emergency or theft of personal belongings.

The research found that 25 to 34-year-olds were the most prudent age group, with 89 per cent of respondents in that category saying they likely to purchase travel insurance when they go on holiday.

On the other hand one in five holidaymakers in the 35 to 44 year old age group admit to never taking out travel insurance.

Although over half of those questioned holiday more than once a year only 30 per cent of holidaymakers opt for annual travel insurance, preferring to take out single trip policies each time they go away.

Nationwide's insurance director, Robin Bailey, said that it is "vital" to have travel insurance.

"It is astounding that people are prepared to take such a gamble when traveling abroad," he added.

Nationwide announced a reduction in interest rates for Nationwide International account holders yesterday.
