Cooperative Financial Services finds Brits are "will-less"

A survey from Cooperative Financial Services of 3,000 UK adults revealed that 72 per cent of us, or 34 million people, do not have a will and have no immediate plans to make one.

One-third of people surveyed felt they were too young to have a will, while 40 per cent claimed that they do not have any assets to pass on.

The research showed that more than one in ten people would not know how to make a will and the same number did not want to make one in order to avoid paying high solicitors fees.

People in the north-east were the least likely to have a will with only one-fifth of people there having drawn one up, but those in the south-west, south-east and Scotland scored better with around one in three people having a will.

Eddie Ryan, managing director of the Co-operative Legal Services, said it was "staggering" that "over 34 million people cannot be certain that when they die their money and possessions will go to the persons they wish, in particular their partners and children."

The government advises everyone to make a will and says it is the best way to avoid a costly legal process and ensure that estates are passed on to family and friends.
