Halifax: Search for the right savings account

Halifax bank has suggested that customers should research their options thoroughly before deciding on a savings account.

Jason Clarke, a spokesperson for the bank, said that due to financial instability in the market, "rates are really fluctuating at the moment" so savers need to look around to get the right deal.

He added that this was especially true of accounts with fixed rates, saying: "One week you'll see really good deals and the next they are just not there."

Mr Clarke advised using several different price comparison sites, as each has their own strengths and weaknesses in the way they compare products.

If a product comes out on top across three or more sites then the chances are it is a good deal, he said.

The Times reported last month that the use of price comparison sites is becoming increasingly popular among consumers keen to get the best deal.
