Halifax Insurance warns homeowners to watch out for the wind

As winds of up to 77 miles per hour battered Britain last year they caused a huge £4.5 billion worth of damage, new research from Halifax General Insurance has revealed.

It found that over 1.5 million homes had their roofs affected, causing a real headache for those without proper buildings insurance.

The average cost of the wind damage was £2,800 per household, or 12 per cent of the average British salary.

A further £2.5 billion worth of damage was caused by holes in the roof caused by the wind allowing water into property, causing damp, flooding, mould, damaged ceilings and for some unlucky homeowners, electrical fires.

Halifax also revealed that it was not only houses that were badly affected by the winds, but gardens and cars too.

Over 150,000 householders reported having had plants devastated by winds, with a significant number also suffering damage to sheds, outbuildings and garden furniture, while flying tiles and other debris caused damage to 62,000 cars and 15,000 broken windows.

With a recent German study predicting an increase of up to 37 per cent for storm losses in the UK, Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, warned that "homeowners without adequate buildings insurance cover risk finding a huge hole blown in their finances by the cost of repairs".

Halifax published advice last month to help people protect their property from storm damage after the Met Office issued warnings of severe gales and snow.
