It noted that not all insurance policies cover risk of accidents off-piste and advises skiers to check their policies.
This time of year is popular for skiing holidays but there have been high winds, increased snow fall and more reports of avalanches across Europe and North America, it added.
Head of travel services Helen Warburton said many people "enjoy the challenge" of off-piste skiing and snowboarding, but most policies require accompaniment by a qualified guide or instructor.
"The costs for medical treatment in ski resorts can be very high and accidents are potentially more likely to happen with the high risk of avalanches as well as hazards hidden under the deep snow," she added.
Meanwhile, Nationwide has also warned credit card customers against using dynamic currency conversion, which gives them the option of converting money to sterling and incurs an exchange rate set by the retailer.
Some £34,000 was overpaid by Nationwide credit card customers in just four popular European ski resorts last season as a result.
