Abbey: Public transport hold-ups costing UK business

As most British commuters will testify, relying on public transport to get to work on time is a risky business.

New research from Abbey Business Banking has found that public transport users experience problems with their journey about once a week, leaving them approximately 36 minutes late for work each time.

The bank has worked out that that costs businesses £212 million in lost productivity for the 6.7 million public transport users who are regularly late.

More than half a million Brits are unable to get to work using public transport at least once a month, while 270,000 do not turn up at all for one day of the month due to travel woes.

People in the south-east are most likely to leave to the car at home, with 42 per cent of them relying on public transport to get to work and more than 90 per cent experiencing delays.

Those in the Midlands, perhaps wisely, avoid using trains and buses to get to work with only 28 per cent using them.

Ian Wilson, managing director of Abbey's Business Banking, said: "The inconvenience of public transport delays is one most of us have experienced but… the impact on our working day is often overlooked, not to mention the cost to our employer."

He added that the impact is often felt most by small businesses.

Abbey revealed yesterday that current confusion about the future of the UK economy has left homeowners in a quandary over their remortgaging options.
