AA identifies seven types of distressed motorists

The AA has worked with its emergency patrol teams to try and identify the seven most common types of driver found broken-down on the UK's roads.

It intends to use the information to train its new recruits, which is essential with AA patrols being sent out to up to 10,000 stressed-out motorists a day.

The identified driver types will be incorporated into the AA's existing customer care module that all new recruits must pass as part of their training programme.

Donald MacSporran, head of AA patrol training, explained: "It's vital that patrols can prioritise when arriving at a breakdown situation, whether that's making sure children are in a safe area, knowing how to speak with all AA members regardless of age, or dealing with the assertive business type who has little time or patience."

It has managed to narrow down its research into seven categories: Fix-It First Fathers, Teacher's Pets, Old and Personables, Motor Mouths, Ms Independent, Mindful Mums, and Peter Pans.

AA Patrol of the Year Adam Ashmore said that "no two days are the same out on the road as an AA patrol, and the wide variety of the people you meet along the way is what makes the job so satisfying".

Research from the motoring organisation last year found that car buyers are tightening their belts this year, with fewer people planning to purchase a new car.
