Post Office offers Chinese takeaway

The Post Office bureaux de change, the UK's largest provider of foreign currency, is set to make Chinese yuan available at all its major branches.

It has found that over the past three years sales of the currency have grown by more than 337 per cent, which corresponds with a quadrupling of travel bookings to China BY tour operators during the same period.

With the Beijing Olympic Games less than six months away, the Post Office expects demand for the yuan to "mushroom" during 2008.

Figures released by Sportsworld, the UK’s official Olympics ticket and tour operator, show that ticket sales for the games are 100 per cent ahead of Athens at the same stage four years ago.

It is therefore putting the Chinese yuan in its top tier of currencies, so it will be available on demand at 1,400 Post Office bureaux de change branches nationwide.

Post Office head of travel, Helen Warburton, said: "The evidence suggests that putting the spotlight on China will help to accelerate growth in tourism."

In other news, the company announced yesterday that it has cut the rate on its three-year fixed-rate mortgage to 5.34 per cent, the third such decrease since the product's launch at the end of 2007.
