Tesco Insurance says co-habiting is best

Tesco has found that when it comes to car insurance, it pays for couples to take that big step and move in together.

Its research revealed that co-habiting couples can save on average over £100 by taking out a joint policy.

Despite the potential savings, Tesco discovered that only one-third of couples tell their insurer immediately when they move in together.

Almost half wait until their policy is up for renewal, while 17 per cent admit to never adding their partner to their policy.

Paul Baxter, a spokesman for TescoCompare.com, said that many people believe that their premium will go up if they add their partner onto their existing car insurance policies, but in fact the opposite generally is true and premiums go down, as co-habiting couples are seen as carrying a lower risk.

He added: "There are many things drivers can do to lower their annual car insurance premium and adding your partner can be a very effective way of cutting costs."

Tesco car insurance also announced today this it is offering a £50 discount on shopping or fuel at its outlets.
