Cooperative: White leads the way for house-hunters

Research from Cooperative Bank has found that 29 per cent of Brits prefer white front doors, while 20 per cent favour red and one in six would go for a blue entrance.

Pink, however, was not so popular - over a third of people admitted that a rosy front door would put them off buying a property altogether.

Home-owners hoping to sell their property should also pay attention to the smell: fresh bread and flowers will tempt buyers in, while dampness and tobacco will have them running for the exit.

Although these superficial features may only have a minor impact on a home-buyer's decisions, the bank's research shows that there are certain 'must-haves' that people seek when they are looking for a new property.

The number one priority for many people is a garden, with 74 per cent of people unwilling to even consider a property without one, followed by a large kitchen and a garage.

John Barker, head of mortgages for the Co-operative Bank, said: "Although moving home can be a stressful time for people, the research shows there are many small changes people can make which can really enhance the appeal of their property."

In other news, a new study from the Council of Mortgage Lenders has revealed that many people are now "dipping in and out of home-ownership", rather than working their way steadily up the property ladder.
