FSA helps homeowners "stay in control" of their mortgage

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) is launching a new advertising campaign aimed at homeowners who are concerned about meeting their mortgage repayments.

In particular, the UK's financial watchdog is focusing on the 1.4 million households whose short-term fixed-rate mortgages are due to end in 2008, as well as others whose discounts deals are coming to a close.

The FSA has published a checklist to help people stay in control of their mortgage on its website, which advises people to check their budgets, start planning for the future now and to get help if they find themselves falling behind with payments.

Chris Pond, FSA director of financial capability, noted that tougher economic conditions are "putting pressure on family finances".

"For those who are really struggling, don't panic. Talk to your lender or get free, confidential debt advice," he added.

As the credit crunch has taken hold mortgage providers are tightening their lending practices, creating a difficult market for borrowers.
