Abbey: Brits dreaming of going it alone

Entrepreneurial Brits are dreaming of becoming their own boss, with half of the UK's adult population wanting to set up their own businesses, Abbey has revealed.

New research from their bank has found that 49 per cent of Britons would like to start up their own enterprise, but only one in six has done anything towards that goal.

Most people cited a lack of money and concerns about their lack of knowledge as the main things holding them back from taking the first step towards self-employment.

Men were found to be the most internet-orientated, with 25 per cent wanting to start up a web-based businesses, while retail was the most popular sector with women with one in four dreaming of owning their own shop.

Wales and the south-west were found to be the areas with the most entrepreneurial spirit, with 19 per cent of people in those regions having already set up their own businesses, compared to an average of 12 per cent in the rest of the UK.

Ian Wilson, managing director of Abbey Business Banking, said although "lack of money and knowledge are understandable hurdles to getting started … It is at least worth talking to your bank and other Small Business owners before resigning yourself to a life of working for making money for someone else".

According to the latest research from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, 65 per cent of the UK's small and medium-sized enterprises anticipate growth over the next two years.
