Cooperative Insurance urges people to 'stop smoking and start saving'

New research from Cooperative Insurance has revealed that the average smoker spends over £2,000 a year on cigarettes, which amounts to £121,000 over their lifetime.

With National No Smoking Day coming up on March 12th, it is encouraging smokers to ditch the 21,840 packets they are likely to smoke in their life and start saving instead.

Stopping smoking has some obvious health and financial benefits, but it can also knock over a third off premiums for life, critical illness and income protection insurance, as all the research points to the fact that smoking significantly increases the risk of serious illnesses.

It is now known that smoking causes 30 per cent of all cancer deaths and 80 per cent of deaths from bronchitis and emphysema, with men more likely to take up the habit than women.

Fiona Jackson, head of protection at Co-operative Insurance said: "Giving up smoking can save people a significant amount of money as well as hopefully bringing a longer and better quality of life."

No Smoking Day is the UK's foremost national public health event, with more than a million people attempting to kick the habit on the second Wednesday in March every year.
