Halifax Travel Insurance: Long-haul becoming popular for short breaks

New research from Halifax Travel Insurance has found that increasing numbers of Britons are taking long-haul flights to far-flung destinations for short breaks.

More than 3.7 million holidaymakers flew over 5.5 billion miles for a long-haul mini-break last year, with all of them flying for at least seven hours for a holiday that lasted less than a week.

A total of one-in-ten Brits are planning a so-called 'breakneck break' this year, an increase of 35 per cent on 2007 and many of them will be heading for the United States.

Attracted by the strength of the pound against the dollar 1.9 million people travelled to the US for a short break last year, with the Far East and India also popular destinations.

Paul Birkhead, senior manager of pricing and underwriting at Halifax Travel Insurance, cited "better airline quality, the lure of winter sun, favourable exchange rates and cheaper long haul flights" as the main reasons why many people are now opting for long-haul mini-breaks.

However, he warned holidaymakers not to "risk travelling without adequate insurance just because they are taking a short break".

Apacs, the UK payments association, recently warned Brits travelling abroad to make sure they are buying from a reputable source before they use their credit cards.
