Abbey Mortgages: Fixed-rates still dominate

New research from Abbey Mortgages has revealed that fixed-rate mortgages continue to be the most popular option on the market, despite predictions that the Bank of England will cut interest rates further.

In its monthly remortgaging survey, 35 per cent of people said they would choose a fixed-rate option if they were remortgaging tomorrow, an increase of 13 per cent from February.

Of those opting for a fixed-rate mortgage, most favoured a five-year deal.

Tracker mortgages also grew in popularity this month, with 12 per cent of respondents saying they would go for a tracker option.

Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, director of Abbey Mortgages, said: "The findings from our latest remortgage index show that the appetite for fixed rate mortgages remains high despite widespread agreement that rates have further to fall this year."

She suggested that this may be because economic uncertainty is pushing people to try and assert control over their financial situation.

Research released by Abbey last month showed that two-thirds of the British home-owning population would find it difficult to choose their next mortgage if they were remortgaging tomorrow.
