Tesco: Insurance premium for green cars should be axed

Tesco has called on the chancellor to abolish the insurance premium tax for eco-friendly cars, to make them more economically viable.

At the moment, consumers can be paying an average of £50 more to insure a green car - such as the hybrid Toyota Prius - than a standard car of a similar size and features, because of the additional costs of repairing them.

However, with the average car insurance premium standing at around £400, removing the five per cent insurance premium tax on eco-friendly cars would make the cost of insuring them similar to standard cars.

Tesco also suggested a few hints and tips to help motorists cut both their carbon emissions and insurance costs, such as reducing annual mileage or having their car serviced regularly.

It also recommends regularly checking tire pressure and limiting the amount of time spent idling in order to increase fuel efficiency and decrease carbon emissions.

Chancellor Alistair Darling announced a new tax of £2,000 for the most polluting vehicles, such as gas-guzzling 4x4s, in yesterday's Budget.
