Rics price guide 'could be useful' to storm victims

The Royal Institutions of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has reminded homeowners that they can use its Property Makeover Guide Price booklet to assess the cost of storm damage to their buildings.

Earlier this week storms and high tides battered the UK, with a number of properties being damaged, particularly in coastal areas.

The guide, which is published by the Building Cost Information Service (BCIS), tells people what they should expect to pay for over 1,300 different types of work, according to the location of their property.

It lists the average prices for each area for replacing roof tiles, removing large trees and replacing chimney pots, among other things.

Andrew Thompson, international development director at BCIS, said: "Getting an accurate estimate of the repair cost can help put your mind at ease, as well as help you to negotiate with your insurer or contractor about the work."

Lloyds TSB Insurance reported a 150 per cent increase in the number of new claims it registered last Monday, indicating the scale of damage to people's homes.
