AA: Green credentials 'important' for car buyers

Black may have overtaken silver as the car colour of choice for UK motorists, but green credentials are becoming increasingly important, according to new research from the AA.

It found that 23 per cent of drivers planning to buy a car this year say that want a car that is environmentally friendly, compared with just six per cent of motorists in 2006.

At the same time, there has also been a decline in the number of people looking to buy a sporty car and an increase in the popularity of small family cars, such as VW Golfs or Honda Civics.

Just two per cent of car buyers plan to buy a gas-guzzling MPV or SPV, compared to five per cent in 2006.

That figure could potentially continue to drop, as the chancellor announced plans for a new £2,000 tax on the highest-polluting vehicles in yesterday's Budget.
