Abbey: Hungover Brits cost their employers

British businesses could be set to lose £27 million tomorrow, as their hungover employees take the day off after St Patrick's Day revelries, according to Abbey.

The bank's research found that one in five Brits plan to celebrate the Irish patron saint's day this year, with 300,000 people anticipating they will be too hungover to go to work, causing millions of pounds in lost wages.

Abbey revealed that the younger generation were the most likely to pull a sickie because of a hangover, with one in seven 18 to 24-year-olds admitting to having taken days off in the last year because they had been out drinking the night before.

They were also among the most likely to celebrate St Patrick's Day, perhaps with a traditional Guinness or two.

Paula Ickinger from Abbey Business Banking recommended "exercising a bit of caution if you're planning on celebrating on Monday; taking time off to recover could prove both detrimental to both yourself and your company".

Recent research also found that travel delays caused by public transport lose businesses millions of pounds every year when their employees are late or are unable to get into work at all.
