Tesco home insurance warns of British summer crime

As summer approaches Tesco home insurance has warned people to check their gardens to ensure they are fully burglar-proof.

It spoke to Mick Kelly, manager of neighbourhoodwatch.net, who dubbed this time of year British Summer Crime.

He revealed that over half of all break-ins occur from back of the house and urged people to "get out into the garden and make sure your fencing has stood up to the winter gales".

Tesco has come up with a number of hints and tips to ensure gardens are fully secure, including planting prickly plants such and roses and holly under window sills to prevent easy entry.

It also suggested adding loose trellises to fences or walls as they are difficult to climb up and installing security lighting.

Allan Burns, head of Tesco home insurance, said: "Now is a good time to raise awareness of how to improve home security by using the environment outside your home."

Nationwide has urged people to make sure they have adequate insurance for their garden this bank holiday, after it found that 35 per cent of households valued their garden contents at between £250 and £1,000.
