Abbey Mortgages: First-time buyers "squandering" their nest eggs

New research from Abbey Mortgages has revealed that four times as many first-time buyers are dipping into their deposit savings than a year ago.

It found that 42 per cent of Brits currently saving up for their first home have taken a combined total of £1.9 billion out of their nest eggs.

The money is being spent on a range of items, with fashion and gadgets the most common reason for people to raid their savings.

The day-to-day cost of living, which has risen significantly over the last year, was also cited as a major factor by 53 per cent of people.

Most of the people surveyed expected they would need to save an average of around £23,000 to enable them to buy a property, although that varied considerably according to region.

Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, director of Abbey Mortgages, said: "If you're single-minded and set yourself a realistic savings target then you could find yourself making an offer on a house sooner than you think."

With many mortgage lenders now demanding that borrowers provide bigger deposits, first-time buyers may have to guard their nest eggs more carefully.
