Around one in ten respondents went further, admitting to regularly talking or texting on the phone at the meal table.
In an indication of the prominence that technology now has in many people's lives, 30 per cent of Britons now refer to their lounge as the TV or home cinema room.
Meanwhile, 35 per cent of households said they had disregarded the no elbows on the table rule and 30 per cent no longer bothered passing dishes, preferring to simply reach over instead.
Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal & General's general insurance business, said: "Changes in technology and household entertainment are impacting the way people behave and interact in their home."
Legal & General announced yesterday that it has launched a limited-edition offer on its six-year capital guaranteed bond seven, with an increased level of FTSE 100 index participation.
