LV= Home Insurance: Dusty sports gear still needs insuring

According to research from Liverpool Victoria's (LV=) home insurance team, although almost one in five UK households has a set of golf clubs, half of them have not be used in the last six months.

With the US Masters tournament approaching, the insurer is urging UK golfers to pick up their £1.1 billion worth of idle clubs and head off to the golf club.

In addition, it found that over £10.4 billion worth of tennis, squash and badminton racquets have not been used in the last six months.

Although the value of the sporting goods in UK homes totals tens of billions of pounds, over 1.9 million people leave their equipment open to theft by storing it in an unlocked shed, unsecured in the garden or open in the car.

Emma Holyer, a spokesperson for LV= home insurance, advised: "People using sports equipment outside of the home should ensure they have personal possessions insurance cover."

For those who are feeling more active, Direct Line insurance has warned joggers to be careful about keeping valuables such as wallets and mobile phones in their pockets when they go out for a run.
