Abbey: Parents believe right name is the key to a good future

New research from Abbey has found that most British parents (70 per cent) believe that choosing the right name for their child can help them get ahead in life.

Its survey revealed that eight million (32 per cent) parents think that the right name can give a child confidence, while a further two million think it will help their offspring's career prospects.

The importance of choosing the 'right' name may explain why parents spend 45 hours on average trying to decide on a moniker for their child.

When it comes to the inspiration for a name, the majority of people (28 per cent) turn to a baby name book. Only 13 per cent follow the tradition of naming their offspring after a relation, while one in ten babies are now named after a famous person.

Steve Shore, director of Abbey Banking, said: "There is no doubt that children's names reflect people's aspirations, and parents believe names can affect career prospects. The same is true of choosing a children's bank account. Picking the right bank with a good rate is crucial."
