HSBC: Asian equity markets have good investment potential

HSBC is recommending that investors consider Asian dividend-focused strategies, which should "produce positive returns".

The bank cites the high yield of Asian equity markets, which are currently higher than local interest rates for the first time since July 2001 and the strong payout power of Asian companies as the main reasons why this is the case.

With the markets currently volatile, Ayaz Ebrahim, chief executive officer for HSBC's Halbis in Asia-Pacific, said now is a good time to "focus on companies with payout power arising from strong cashflow or improving capital management".

This would provide "a healthy level of return and a cushion against further falls", he added.

Mr Ebrahim also predicted growth is going to become more difficult to source and recommended that investors "pay a premium" for companies that have consistently rewarded minority shareholders.

Earlier this week HSBC launched a new Capital Protected Plan and individual savings account, which are the bank's first investment products to offer exposure to the HSBC Global Emerging Markets Titans index.
