Saga Insurance: Submerged objects boat owners worst enemy

Saga Insurance has compiled a list of the top ten boat insurance claims, with collisions with a submerged object topping the list.

Some 24 per cent of boat claims are because of a collision, at an average cost of £2,419.

The insurers suggest boat owners could protect their vessel by having marine charts on board and having a sonar device fitted.

Theft was the second most common reason, with the average claim coming to £1,820.

Again Saga has come up with a number of hints and tips for deterring thieves, including removing anything valuable, closing curtains where applicable and taking anything loose off deck or out of the cockpit.

Collision while cruising came next on the list, followed by wind damage while moored, collision while moored and flood while moored.

For those who prefer to stay on dry land, Saga Motor Insurance revealed yesterday that drivers who listen to blues music in their car are the most likely to be caught speeding, with 49 per cent of them having committed such an offence.
