Zurich Insurance: Owner break-ins reveal security weaknesses

Zurich Insurance is warning homeowners that if they can break into their property, then the chances are someone else can as well.

Its comments follow research conducted by the firm which found that 32 per cent of the people it surveyed believed they could break into their own home, while one in ten has actually done so.

For 37 per cent of those it was as simply as climbing through a window, while two-thirds of respondents were able to break-and-enter within 15 minutes.

Over half of the homeowners surveyed admitted to basic security lapses, such as leaving windows open or keys in locks.

Mike Quinton, managing director for direct & partnerships at Zurich Insurance, said: "If homeowners can break-in to their own properties that's a major warning sign for them to take stock of their security measures."
