Abbey promotes Africa and Middle East as investment hotspots

Abbey has found that emerging markets in Africa and the Middle East are continuing to increase in popularity among investors.

It said that although "higher inflation, concerns over the credit market and the slowing US economy" have impacted on emerging markets this year, they have diversified their base of trading partners and have therefore been less affected by the decline in global economic growth.

The global demand for raw materials is benefiting Africa, which is the third largest region in gas and oil reserves as well as exporting large amounts of minerals, timber and diamonds.

China in particular has significantly increased its investments in the region.

This has also profited the Middle East, which Abbey describes as an area with good potential for growth.

In a statement, the bank said: "Fund managers have to be increasingly dynamic, taking a holistic view on emerging markets, rather than focussing on just political factors or fundamental analysis."

Barclays Wealth recently surveyed 742 of its customers and found that with 17.3 per cent of the vote, emerging markets were the most popular investment sector, beating established areas of Europe, UK equities and property.
