Sainsbury's Home Insurance warns tree-planters about subsidence

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has found that nearly 9.7 million people are planning to plant trees in their garden this year, but it is warning them to be aware of the risk of subsidence.

It is urging people to pick appropriate trees for the size of their garden and ensure they are planted a decent distance from the house.

Otherwise they could be increasing the risk of subsidence, particularly with certain types of trees such as leylandii or willow.

According to the bank's analysis of industry data, UK insurers have paid out an average of £710,000 a day for subsidence claims over the past five years.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "It's great news that so many of us are good-intentioned when it comes to planting trees, but it's important that we don't put our properties at unnecessary risk of subsidence. Our advice is to do your homework before putting spade to soil."

Yesterday Sainsbury's Car Insurance advised people to ensure that their child is issued with the appropriate safety seating before going on the school run.
