Sainsbury's Home Insurance finds millions of Brits are uninsured

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has found that around 4.7 million UK adults do not have home contents insurance.

Those in London were the most likely to not have home contents cover, with 22 per cent not insuring their possessions.

People in Yorkshire and Humberside were the best prepared when it comes to home insurance, with 96 per cent having a policy.

The main reason given for not having cover was simply that it is unnecessary, while14 per cent of people said they could not afford it.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "It's remarkable given the value of people's home contents that so many do not have cover. Home insurance does not have to be expensive."

Last week Direct Line home insurance urged tenants to take out contents insurance and liaise with their landlords to ensure adequate security measures are in place.
