Saga welcomes care review but stresses need for financial advice

Saga has welcomed Prime Minister Gordon Brown's decision to hold a social care review to look at ways of making care services fairer and more affordable.

It has called for action to be taken as soon as possible, but urged people to take professional financial advice in the interim.

According to the group's research, the average cost of a four-year stay in a care home is set to double over the next 20 years, from £112,312 to £223,476.

"It is essential for people to seek professional financial advice as most people could protect an inheritance whilst still making funding provision for their long term care needs," it said in a statement.

Earlier this month Saga launched a new online savings account guarantee that promises customers the rate on their savings will not be more than 0.25 per cent AER below the average of the top five variable accounts.
