Zurich Insurance: Britons keen to volunteer

Britain has become a nation of volunteers according to a new study, with unpaid community work set to rise further over the next 12 months.

Insurance giant Zurich has found over a third of adults in the UK are involved in voluntary projects, together spending 52 million hours a week offering their services.

Over the next year the number of volunteers is expected to top 50 per cent.

However, Paul Emery, head of charities and voluntary organizations at Zurich, insists better training, insurance and improved personal safety procedures are necessary to make this a reality.

He says: "While it's encouraging that people want to get involved with their local community on a whole range of issues, it's important that charities, local authorities and community groups ensure they are taking action to address the barriers people face to becoming involved."

Zurich boasts its own volunteer project - an annual event encouraging its staff to take up challenges from local charities and organisations.
