LV= finds British motorists unsure about repairs

New vehicles are causing a headache for British motorists to understand and repair, a survey has found.

Insurance firm LV= discovered a third of drivers are left confused by their own dashboards while almost three quarters confess doing repair work themselves would be impossible in the event of a breakdown.

Even basic repairs would leave more than 80 per cent of car owners stumped, the poll claimed, while nearly half of respondents confessed poor or 'non-existent' knowledge of what goes on under the car bonnet.

Emma Holyer, spokeswoman for breakdown service Britannia Rescue, says: "With many cars now relying on complex electronics or technology, many problems now require specialist equipment, as well as specialist knowledge, to get the problem fixed.

"This means it is even more vital that motorists take out breakdown cover."

Her advice comes as another survey by Sainsbury's Car Insurance recently revealed 1.15 million British people have admitted driving without insurance in the last year.
