Legal & General Investment Management expects recession

Legal & General Investment Management has predicted that a UK recession could be likely this year.

It notes that there a more indicators now suggesting that a recession will occure than thee were before the 2001 economic slowdown.

Specifically, the economy is borrowing more now, lending standards have "tightened more aggressively" and high food and energy prices have dampened consumer spending.

Despite the fact that several things could improve growth prospects, such as an ending of the credit crunch or stabilisation of oil prices, the group states: "We remain convinced that global growth needs to slow further to curtail commodity demand."

It also suggested that the burden of an economic slowdown is most likely to be felt in countries in the weakest financial positions, which today includes the US and UK.

Yesterday, HSBC Investments suggested that the world is becoming more emerging markets-led.
