Brits will spend an average of more than £549,000 on Saturdays alone during their life time, according to new research from the Co-operative Bank Credit Cards.

It found that many people are treating themselves at the weekend after a long week at work or university spending an average of £175 each on food and drink, travelling, clothes and entertainment.

Shoes were shown to be the biggest expenditure at £25.44, followed by clothes, eating out, drink, and food.

Maxine Xodo, product manager for The Co-operative Bank Credit Cards, commented: "As a nation we work some of the longest hours in Europe and many people live for the weekend, with Saturday being the one-day where people feel they can let their hair down and enjoy themselves."

However, she suggested that it is important for people to plan their finances carefully so they are able to pay all their bills at the end of the month.

Yesterday, Abbey advised football fans planning to travel to Moscow for the Champions League final that they could end up paying more for a football affiliated credit card than a standard one.
